CANCER AND TUMOR

The uncontrollable cell division results in the formation of a new growth which is commonly known as Tumor. Medically it is termed neoplasm. Human immune system has the power to find these neoplastic cells and it has the potential to destroy it. Some of these cells can escape from the immune system and later it develops malignancy thereby leading to cancer. The first diagnostic step in any kind of cancer treatment is the determination of the nature of the tumor. Tumors are classified into two types. It may be either Benign or malignant. Benign tumors can never become a cancer. It has a slow growth and it cannot really influence the nearby tissues and it can never really be a threat. Once if the benign tumor is removed, it can come again. On the other hand, malignant tumor is termed cancer. This tumor usually invades the nearby tissues and spreads all over the body. Even after the removal of these malignant tumors, the traces that are left would eventually bring back the cancer once again. In the early stages, malignant tumors have a very little potential to spread. This is the pure reason why cancer can be completely cured if shown in early stages.

Cancer deaths have slowly declined globally because of the fact that there are better treatment and diagnostic techniques that are available today. This helps in screening cancer in the early stage itself and thereby improving the patient’s life expectancy. With the latest available treatment methods, a cancer detected in the early stages have the high possibility of attaining complete cure.

OLDEN DAY TREATMENT

Greek physicians were not fortunate enough to have the knowledge on human anatomy.  
They were not even aware of blood circulation. Hippocrates had a very basic definition of human body and he believed it to be comprised of four fluids 1) Blood 2) Phlegm  
3) Black bile 4) yellow bile. Black bile was the key in cancer identification. He believed that cancer was caused only because of the accumulation of excess black bile. This was the widespread thoughts people had for the next 1700 years. Spiritual people had the idea that cancer was caused only by Gods. It was a real challenge for the physicians to find out a cure for this deadly disease. In 1628 the practice of autopsy came into existence. The first autopsy was done by Harvey which paved the way for learning more about human anatomy and physiology. With the help of autopsies physicians were able to get a clear understanding about various functions taking place inside the human body. It was the same period during which the concept of blood circulation was invented. Till 1760 these autopsies were performed only to find the cause of death. Giovanni was the first person who performed the autopsy and generated several reports on cancer.

VARIOUS THEORIES ON THE CAUSES OF CANCER

Hippocrates’ Black Bile theory was came into existence during 17th century replacing the lymphatic theory. The discovery of lymphatic system was the biggest milestone ever achieved by the ancient physicians. Any change or abnormality in the lymphatic system was the cause of cancer. With the help of lymphatic system, physicians were able to envisage the truth behind human immune system. The physicians believed that if they could find the causes for the abnormalities in lymphatic system, they could easily find a cure for cancer. During late 19th century, cells were recognized by Rudolph Virchow. Rudolph Virchow also found that even cancer cells were derived from other cells. Many other theories about cancer were discovered during that period. Some physicians believed that cancer was caused by parasites and traumas. Some of them even believed that cancer spreads like a liquid. Karl Thiersch, a German surgeon was the first person who discovered that cancer was caused by malignant cells. A wrong Nobel price was awarded for a physician who ended that stomach cancer was caused by worms. A greatest progression in the cancer diagnostics was sensed in 20th century. Therapy including chemotherapy and radiation therapy was discovered.

HISTORY OF CANCER

This disease has taken the lives of a lot of people for many centuries. It is definitely not a new disease. It has been there right from human evolution. We are certainly aware of something about cancer only because of the early investigations done on this ailment.
